Hungary tourist information

Hungary lies in central Europe and is a good introduction to traveling into Eastern Europe, as it combines Western charm and luxury with Eastern prices. The lakeside resorts of silky smooth Lake Balaton and picturesque architecture in the villages make it an attractive country to visit. The capital Budapest straddles the river Danube and is an absolute must-see. Because of the long multicultural history sensible Germanic layout is uniquely combined with decadent Turkish baths, Viennese coffee houses and sober socialist structures.

Hungary by train

Train service in Hungary is reliable though somewhat slower than in western Europe. Timetables for arrivals are displayed in stations on white posters, while departures are on yellow posters. InterCity (IC) trains are the most comfortable and the fastest. Reserving a seat in advance is necessary. ‘Gyors’ fast trains are just as fast, but older. Avoid the slow ‘személy’ and ‘sebes’ trains that stop at all local stations if you're in a hurry.
