In May 2006 the union of Serbia and Montenegro came to a peaceful end when Montenegrins voted for independence. The country has a narrow coastal strip backed by a high mountain range. Historic walled towns like Ulcinj, Stari Bar and Kotor are great for exploring. And the same deep blue Adriatic Sea from Croatia continues down Montenegro’s coast. Montenegro by train

There is a local train service, operating from Bar (Montenegro’s main seaport), through Podgorica and Kolasin and Mojkovac to Bijelo Polje. There is also a regular passenger train service from Subotica through Novi Sad and Belgrade in Serbia. The overnight trains with sleeping cars are pretty comfortable and must be booked in advance.
