In May 2006 the union of Serbia and Montenegro came to a peaceful end when Montenegrins voted for independence. The country has a narrow coastal strip backed by a high mountain range. There is a local train service, operating from Bar (Montenegro’s main seaport), through Podgorica and Kolasin and Mojkovac to Bijelo Polje. There is also a regular passenger train service from Subotica through Novi Sad and Belgrade in Serbia. The overnight trains with sleeping cars are pretty comfortable and must be booked in advance.
